Plants need proper care and attention all year round, but in the cold and hot seasons they need special care and treatment. As the months change, the way we grow them may change too. In winter, we need to watch factors such as sunlight, which decreases during the day, and more frequent rain and wind, which can change the pace of plant growth.

The most sensitive species, such as flowers and vegetables, are the ones that suffer most. That is why it is necessary to pay attention to essential care, such as the amount of water when watering them. Although plants lose less water in cold weather, it is important never to let them dry out. Another very important precaution is protection from wind, especially for ornamental species, which naturally have more delicate foliage and structure.

How to prevent damage?

One solution is to bring plants indoors at night, and also during periods of heavy rain and wind. Where it is not possible to move pots and seedlings to a sheltered spot, another option is to make living fences, where other plants, usually climbers, block the wind and cold, creating a microclimate in that area.

Some winter practices

Because of lower temperatures, too much water can also be a villain, as it can kill roots and attract pests, making plants lose important nutrients in the long run. That is why overwatering is not advisable.

Another key tip concerns pruning frequency. In this season, pruning should focus on branches and leaves that are already about to fall, because growth is slower during this period and a poorly done pruning can also let pathogens in.

Stopping fertilization altogether is not recommended, but you can reduce it, or at least not increase it, and even reuse fertilized soil in other pots if the plant doesn't respond.

Winter light

Plant metabolism changes in winter for several reasons. With less light and often fewer nutrients, plants naturally slow down photosynthesis and other biochemical activities. During this period, it is best to keep potted plants close to bright windows, where there is more sunlight, or even place them near yellow incandescent lamps during the day.
